Over 25 years ago our family decided to be pioneers of a little movement called green products. A couple of years ago, after a much-needed break from Seventh Generation, we had an idea; we wanted to create the most sustainable condom in the world. We spent almost two years developing and refining this concept, and on July 16, 2014 we launched Sustain.
This past year we have grown, learned, made mistakes, celebrated accomplishments and successfully shocked more people than we can remember. We’ve watched women’s reproductive rights be challenged, we’ve seen people come together to fight the dangerous reduction in sexual health care services for women, and we’ve recognized that we cannot solve the issues our world faces on our own.
The world we live in is an incredible as well as troubling place. We started this business to connect the dots between reproductive healthcare, sexual wellness, population, climate change, women’s rights, and inequality. We’re committed to being a net-positive company; truly leaving the world a better place than it was before we showed up. To maximize our impact, we’ve partnered with organizations like Planned Parenthood and the National Campaign to Prevent Unplanned Pregnancy because as we mentioned, we cannot do this work without lots of help.
One of the most important lessons we’ve learned is that it takes a deep commitment and not a small amount of bravery to do this work. Those who have been active in reproductive health care for many decades know this all too well. Sex, for most people, is something we love to watch, dream about, experience and then boast to our friends about. But sex is not something we talk about, discuss with our children, understand deeply or know what to do about when something goes wrong.
Sustain’s mission feels even more compelling and critical today than it did a year ago:
To celebrate, educate and empower women by providing the products, knowledge and inspiration they need to take control of their sexual health. Operating at the highest level of responsibility, we will be a disruptive force in the reproductive healthcare industry, driving it towards greater access and safer products.
We recognize that the products we make are only a small part of the solution, but with your help we have started to build a community that’s really making a difference. In the past year we:
- Generated over 10,000 signatures for a petition to the FDA to eliminate nitrosamines from condoms
- Helped over (approx) 400,000 people have safer, healthier sex
- Donated over $30,000 to women’s reproductive health care groups
- Prevented a bunch of unplanned pregnancies
We look forward to what's to come.
